The Journey Of A Community Development Worker

by Teddy Bonginkosi Martin

My inspiration to write this book comes from my own journey – the path I’ve walked, the challenges I’ve faced, and the strength to rise against all odds to reach this point. One of the proudest moments along the way was receiving the Gauteng Service Excellence Award. More than anything, I wanted to motivate the next generation and leave behind a legacy for my children and family.

This book takes you through the many chapters of my life, showing why it is so important to dedicate oneself to improving the lives of others. Community development lies at the heart of any nation that seeks to be a better place for all its people. I have been privileged to serve in this field for 13 years, meeting countless individuals who have shaped and inspired me in profound ways.

Reading this book will uncover the story behind my years of service and reveal many aspects of who I am. I want to thank my wife, Khanyisiwe, who has been my pillar of strength through all seasons. My children, Nompumelelo and Sandile, who believe in me njalo – always. I am blessed to still have both my parents, who raised me to become the man I am today. My heartfelt thanks also go to my sister and brothers, who continue to stand by me.

To my political mentors – the late Sityebi Lumka, Commissar Lunga Sisulu, Diliza Matshoba, and Siphiwe Ngwenya – thank you for your guidance and inspiration. And to the comrades with whom I’ve shared the trenches – Phumlani Xaba, Kenny and Bessie Fihla, Mogomotsi Mogodira, Sipho “Score” Ndebele, Vusi Zwane, Dada Morero, Smanga Simelani, the late Chris Ngcobo, the late Bheki Mlangeni, Lesetja Kganyago, and many others – I salute you.
