The Things I Couldn’t Say is a poetry collection by Rethabile Makenete, also known as Soreli, written during a deeply transformational period between 2020 and 2025. Beginning after high school and unfolding through the unfamiliar world of adulthood, these poems capture the complexity of becoming. Through themes of betrayal, love, heartbreak, depression, loneliness, identity and hope, Soreli gives voice to the emotions and experiences that were often too difficult to express aloud. Each poem is a reflection of a young woman trying to understand a life that sometimes felt too heavy to carry and a heart too overwhelmed to explain. The collection is an intimate journey through the words she swallowed, the feelings she buried, the questions she could not ask, and the truths she could only put to paper. Yet beyond the pain lies a gradual discovery of healing, identity and hope. Soreli learns that hope does not always have to be unwavering; sometimes, it is simply waking up the next morning and choosing to try again. The Things I Couldn’t Say is a tribute to the girl who survived — and an invitation to believe that there can be life beyond what hurts.
